Most online top hit video tutorials for these Achievements/Trophies state the easiest way to get this is with the lone guard at the “White Orchard” Village – This is where the problem is! I must have tried this about 50 times over and over, thinking my timing was out, until I managed to figure it out. The majority of players will respond to this question with a howling crescendo of “Git Gud!” stating that the Counterattack needs to be effectively timed, which it does and I thought the same thing! Some of you may have come across this problem yourself or asked the question “How do I counter attack/I can’t Parry” etc.
I encountered this problem myself when trying to get the “Kaer Morhen Trained” and the subsequent “What Was That?” Achievements /Trophies due to being unable to use the counterattack ability and I have found, what seems to be, a solution to quite a common problem with this, so thought I would share. It’s not really a bug as such I would say it’s more of a general mechanical issue, it’s actually quite hard to distinguish in this case because I’m not sure if it’s intended or not. I’ve been meaning to post this for a little while now, but I’ve seen a small Achievement/Trophy “blocking” Issue with this reported in various areas online with no obvious answer. Getting knocked out will cost you money, so make a backup beforehand.“Can’t Counter Attack/Parry” Issue – *Solution! So if you mess up you will respawn right in front of the archer without any loading times and can keep trying. Doing so against friendly guards is great as they will only knock you out and not kill you. The best place to do this is by the river, North of the Woesong Bridge fast travel point on the White Orchard map (first town you enter in the game). Your timing needs to be perfect and it's going to take a few tries to complete.
Always press the block-button when the enemy has his sword vertically in the air above his head (a fraction of a second after he starts swinging the sword and a fraction of a second before he hits you). You must press the block-button ( ) just before the enemy is about to hit you. Look for a single city guard and counter 10 attacks in a row. Archers are also perfect as they always carry a sword. This works best against human city guards with swords.
